Before I try what some of the old posts suggest to try & fix it (which seems basically to be just to restore to default settings? ) I wanted some feedback first, because this just makes no sense to me. I do not ever mess with the Avast settings either, nor do I understand why it's causing this issue all of a sudden. I have used Avast for MANY MANY MANY years and I have NEVER had this problem before now. What is causing this & how can I stop it without having to disable Avast completely? I have done some googling and found others have had this issue at some point as well. I just had a hunch, and thought to try and disabled Avast, & as soon as i did, tada, internet working fine. Even though my modem clearly seems to be working fine, the first thing I did was reset it and my router, and of course, they are both working fine. Yesterday, it lasted longer than usual, then just now, I couldn't get a connection. It's extremely inconvenient when I am busy working on something important & suddenly there's no net. Sometimes it will just drop for no reason, but usually reconnects quickly, however, it's been happening more often also. Thanks anyhow. So, I have been noticing lately, some unusual things happening with my internet connection. My conclusion is that I had a partially-installed or fully-installed crap Avast profile for a few hours, and that the replacement profiled downloaded when I left the system on for a few hours. Uh, no, thanks very much for the info in your post, but I use Mozilla Firefox and didn't need to add the proxy reference to the loopback IP address:port number. >You also need to set-up your browser to use the web shield proxy also with win98, see image extract avast help file. >I'm sorry since I don't use MS Outlook I don't know how the Outlook/Exchange plug-in works with win98. My assumption was and is that only Avast itself was blocking all these ports. My XP box has the internal 'Firewall', but this W98 system has none. >What is your firewall, ensure it allows the above files access ? >OK avast isn't junk, and what you appear to be experiencing is your firewall blocking avast, ashWebSv.exe avast Web Shield, ashMaiSv.exe avast email scanner, it also looks like it is blocking tup avast update also. I doubt it depends in any way on your specific Ethernet interface driver for example. The loopback interface might well be in a different software layer, more remote from real hardware. Loopback IPv4 address : 127.0.0.1 Your Ethernet interfaces IPv4 address : 192.168.0.10. Tell me Avast isn't junk, and help me understand what this system just went through. Even without the complication of IPv6 youd have two distinct addresses. fully expecting to get cut off from the Web again. I'm going to post this, and then turn services on. Is this a bad profile that got updated while I was away? Right now my Avast services are all shut OFF, there's a little red 'international NO' on the A icon in the system tray. Two hours later, both Outlook 97 and FireFox work perfectly. But I just shut off all Avast services and stomped away from the W98 system, leaving it running. So I was about ready to uninstall Avast and find something which won't block browsing and email. And since the other two systems CAN see it, so it's just the Avast W98 system - with all services OFF. Then my Outlook decided to not reach my ISP's mailserver. I'd PING some of these sites, but one of the trojans took out my msdos.exe and. So I tried to shut down all Avast services, still can't reach the Web via port 80. Last encountered error: Cannot connect to Normally I'd suspect my ISP's DNS servers had gone away, except browsers on the Mac and XP systems can browse normally.ĪND a bright red error box just showed up from my tooltray: Won't find ANY websites on either browser. I shut down all Avast's services, and was able to reach Google, but only for a couple of minutes. Today I can send and recieve email - ports 110 and 25 - but port 80, browsing, seems blocked. I ran a C and D drive check, it found a trojan and quarantined it. So I uninstalled AVG Free, rebooted, and downloaded and installed Avast. Was running AVG Free for a long time, kept it updated, but nonetheless got a series of nasty trojans in December.ĭ2_.exe and af.exe kept reappearing, and one day's AVG profile did find them, but the next day's did not. DSL connect, systems are all on fixed IPs, also I have an XP system and a MAC. I've got a Compaq DeskPro EN running W98SE, Outlook 97, and both IE6 and FireFox.
